Nature, the teacher: Life lessons from nature
The wonders of
nature never cease to amaze me. From the towering mountains to the diligent
ant, there are lessons to be learned and inspiration to be found. Nature is not
only beautiful but also a teacher imparting valuable life lessons.
Life Lessons
from Nature:
· Patience and perseverance
Patience
is a virtue rarely practised in today’s world. Nature abounds in lessons in
patience and perseverance. A seed doesn’t sprout and grow into a mighty tree
overnight. It grows at a certain pace. As much as I would like my
Hibiscus flowers bloom overnight; it’s a slow
process, taking its time. My patience is put to the test, but the wait is worth
it.
I
need to have patience in life, to understand that the results of any endeavour will
take their time. I cannot force anything to happen. I need to cultivate the art
of being patient with my elderly parents and children.
·
Change is the only constant
Nature
teaches me that change is inevitable. The seasons change, leaves fall, storms
occur, and then a rainbow appears in the sky. Embracing the impermanence and transient
nature of life helps me move forward. Fun times will not last, nor will tough
times. Hence, change is the only constant in my life.
·
Adaptability and resilience
Nature
teaches me the importance of resilience and adaptability. Animals and plants
develop remarkable adaptability to changing conditions. The polar bear loads up
on fat so as to enable it to withstand severe Arctic winters. Some succulents
store water in their leaves to combat harsh desert summers.
I,
too, must adapt to changing circumstances and situations in my life to survive.
The ever-changing circumstances may suit me or vice versa. Adapting and
building resilience is my only way to sustainability and progress.
·
Appreciating Diversity.
Each
species or ecosystem in nature has its unique characteristics and
contributions. The marvellous diversity of nature teaches me to embrace and
celebrate differences.
·
Silence and solitude
Amid
the hustle, bustle, and chaos of modern-day living, a placid lake, the soothing
sounds of a gurgling brook, soft rustling of leaves or the whisper of the wind help
me reconnect with myself and find the clarity and peace that I seek.
·
Living in the present
Every
moment in nature is an expression of presence. Each sunrise or sunset, a towering
mountain peak, or a meadow of flowers encourages me to live in and appreciate the
present. Appreciating the sights and sounds of nature teaches me to live in the
present moment and leave behind regrettable moments of the past and anxiety
about the future.
·
Connectivity and unity.
Every
living being, right from the tiniest microorganism to the mightiest of
creatures, plays an important role in maintaining the ecological balance.
Their interconnectedness
teaches me the value of being connected. Just as nature looks to interconnectedness
for its well-being, I, too, will find strength in unity and connection.
The
lessons I learn from nature enrich and add value to my life. I’m able to lead a
more balanced and harmonious life.
