Nature, the teacher: Life lessons from nature

Nature, the teacher: Life lessons from nature

The wonders of nature never cease to amaze me. From the towering mountains to the diligent ant, there are lessons to be learned and inspiration to be found. Nature is not only beautiful but also a teacher imparting valuable life lessons.

Life Lessons from Nature:

·        Patience and perseverance

Patience is a virtue rarely practised in today’s world. Nature abounds in lessons in patience and perseverance. A seed doesn’t sprout and grow into a mighty tree overnight. It grows at a certain pace. As much as I would like my

Hibiscus flowers bloom overnight; it’s a slow process, taking its time. My patience is put to the test, but the wait is worth it.

I need to have patience in life, to understand that the results of any endeavour will take their time. I cannot force anything to happen. I need to cultivate the art of being patient with my elderly parents and children.

·        Change is the only constant

Nature teaches me that change is inevitable. The seasons change, leaves fall, storms occur, and then a rainbow appears in the sky.  Embracing the impermanence and transient nature of life helps me move forward. Fun times will not last, nor will tough times. Hence, change is the only constant in my life.

·        Adaptability and resilience

Nature teaches me the importance of resilience and adaptability. Animals and plants develop remarkable adaptability to changing conditions. The polar bear loads up on fat so as to enable it to withstand severe Arctic winters. Some succulents store water in their leaves to combat harsh desert summers.

I, too, must adapt to changing circumstances and situations in my life to survive. The ever-changing circumstances may suit me or vice versa. Adapting and building resilience is my only way to sustainability and progress.

·        Appreciating Diversity.

Each species or ecosystem in nature has its unique characteristics and contributions. The marvellous diversity of nature teaches me to embrace and celebrate differences.

·        Silence and solitude

Amid the hustle, bustle, and chaos of modern-day living, a placid lake, the soothing sounds of a gurgling brook, soft rustling of leaves or the whisper of the wind help me reconnect with myself and find the clarity and peace that I seek.

·        Living in the present

Every moment in nature is an expression of presence. Each sunrise or sunset, a towering mountain peak, or a meadow of flowers encourages me to live in and appreciate the present. Appreciating the sights and sounds of nature teaches me to live in the present moment and leave behind regrettable moments of the past and anxiety about the future.

·        Connectivity and unity.

Every living being, right from the tiniest microorganism to the mightiest of creatures, plays an important role in maintaining the ecological balance.

Their interconnectedness teaches me the value of being connected. Just as nature looks to interconnectedness for its well-being, I, too, will find strength in unity and connection.

The lessons I learn from nature enrich and add value to my life. I’m able to lead a more balanced and harmonious life.

What lessons has nature taught you?

The Things I Love About Life

The Things I Love About Life

Despite the many forms of ugliness prevalent in the world and the curve balls and lemons that life throws at me, testing my resilience and strength I love that life is still good to me and offers me so much in terms of beauty, joy and connection which makes the journey worthwhile. I enjoy all the material trappings that life provides, but there is so much more that doesn’t’ cost a penny, that life allows me to enjoy.

"What do I love about life?"

Family and friends:

I was born into a family that loved and cared for me. My parents inculcated values that have held me in good stead. I have been blessed with a good spouse and two great children. Despite the many challenges that we have faced, we are still family. I can boast of some beautiful friendships that have stood the test of time, distance and other factors. Life is beautiful. Besides loved ones, life sometimes sends strangers in strangers to help you. Such memorable moments.

The beauty of nature:

Life has allowed me to enjoy the beauty of Mother Earth. From the oceans, forests,  mountains, flora and fauna to the trees outside my window, it truly is a beautiful world. It’s lovely to wake up to sunshine each morning or to gaze at the silvery moon and the stars at night. I love the walks I can take in the numerous parks and gardens, as I commune with nature.

Learning and Growth:

Life has presented me with quite a few lemons, but with each lemon, there has been an opportunity for learning and growth. Each challenge has made me wiser and stronger. Life does not stunt my growth. It allows me to forge ahead, to try again and try the new.

Food:

I’ve never gone to bed hungry. Besides home food, I  also enjoy the luxury of trying out various cuisines at home and when dining out.

Adventure and travel:

I am a travel buff and life allows me to explore my motherland and beyond treating me to scenic beauty, monuments, adventure, new cultures and perspectives.

Creativity and Expression:

Life offers me mediums to create and express my thoughts. To name a few, there is art, music and writing through which I can convey my thoughts and emotions to the world.

Laughter and Smiles:

Life ensures that precious moments bring a smile to my face or big fat guffaws of heartwarming laughter.

Hope:

When I plunge into darkness and despair, life sends me those precious glimmers of hope which help me stay afloat. These beacons of light guide me during the fiercest of storms and give me the courage and strength to keep moving.

Books

life has provided for the bookworm in me. There are so many books and so little time. A book a day keeps the blues away. Life has given me books in all forms. I'm spoilt for choice.

Only focusing on the difficult parts of life, is miserable. Finding joy in life is going to make me happier and healthier.

What are your favourite things about life?

When Life Throws Lemons at You...

When Life Throws Lemons at You…

Life believes in raising us to be strong resilient individuals, and hence I believe, throws the odd lemon at us and asks us to turn the sour lemon into sweet lemonade. Like everybody else, life has given me my fair share of lemons and I understand that I will always have that stock of lemons. Every time I’m handed a lemon, I know there is a lesson to be learnt from the challenge.  When I first receive the lemons, lemonade is the last thing on my mind. I ‘m furious, agitated, depressed, worried and confused and I say it okay to feel that way.  Then slowly sanity and reason begin to prevail and thoughts about lemonade begin to surface. Then I’m hard at work trying to turn the lemons into lemonade.  I’m grateful for the lessons I’ve learned because of the lemons, whether it was health, relationships or money. The lessons have been painful but I know they will hold me in good stead for a lifetime.

When life throws lemons at you, turn them into lemonade is a popular metaphor encouraging us to take a positive attitude in times of crisis. The sour lemon represents the crisis, and the lemonade represents the sweetness, lesson and positivity that can emerge from the situation. Difficult as it may be, you are called to keep going, put on your thinking cap, and find a solution and not crumble under the weight of hopelessness and defeat. I reiterate, that every lemon comes with a lesson. You emerge wiser and stronger as long as you don’t let negativity take over.

Being positive does not mean pretending all is well and the situation doesn’t exist. It means maintaining hope and learning to thrive in difficult situations.

Thus when you are handed lemons:

·       Stay positive and hopeful

·       Look for the silver lining

·       Let your struggle be a source of learning, empowerment and growth.

·       Take to heart the lesson learned from each challenge.

What do you do when you are handed lemons?

Four Values That I believe In.

Honesty – Honesty is the best policy but a rare commodity today. When you are honest, you have more credibility. People can trust you and communicate with you better. When you maintain absolute transparency in your dealings, you endear yourself to others. Honesty may come with a price. You may not receive honesty in return. It’ 's a big bad world out there and some people are waiting, ready to take advantage of you.

Kindness – Kindness is about treating others the way you would want them to treat you. It’s about treating others with respect, patience and thoughtfulness. Kindness is also about lifting others up and helping those in difficult predicaments without expecting anything in return.

Integrity – If you are a person of integrity you will act and speak according to your beliefs. You are trustworthy and incorruptible and will firmly adhere to a code of conduct. When your actions do not match up to your words, you are being hypocritical. If you are not comfortable, you would have to change your beliefs, actions or words.

Gratitude – Being grateful adds so much value to your life. When you give thanks for even the tiniest of blessings, it creates such good vibes and adds to your goodwill. Just as you appreciate the goodness of God and of others in your life, others too will appreciate your presence in their lives.

When gratitude is important to you, you make time to express it in your words, your attitude or your actions. You might maintain a gratitude journal and write down the blessings for the day. As we are so wont to complain about the dark days in our lives, we must also take time to be thankful for the sunshine and warmth that is bestowed on us.

Forgiveness- Forgiveness means letting go of the hurt that someone may he inflicted on you. It does not mean making light of the person's offence but acknowledging that even though the person has hurt you, you are reclaiming your power choosing happiness and peace for yourself, instead of wallowing in a pool of misery, stress and resentment.

Everyone can hurt and forgive but not everyone can cultivate the virtue of forgiveness.

In conclusion, Honesty, integrity, gratitude, forgiveness and kindness are essential values that can enhance the quality of our lives and the quality of our relationships with others.
It may not always be easy but living by these principles and values helps us to make the world a better place.

What are the values that are important to you?

Against All odds

Life's hardly a Bed of Roses

I must tackle a curve ball every day

Amid fear and hopelessness

Despair and frustration

Against all odds

I must stand straight and tall

I've got to keep the faith

Believe that it is not the end of it all

Never mind if situations resolve at their own pace

I'll simply carry on with God's abiding grace.

Music to uplift you.

Life knocks you down time and again, rings you dry. There are days when all seems well with the world and there are days when nothing seems right. What might get you through those nightmarish days? What serves as your band aid?

Music helps me take on the lemons that life has been pelting at me, left, right and centre.

Josh Groban's 'You Raise

Me Up' urges me to keep the faith even when my world is falling apart. Lynda Randle's God on the mountain tells me that the God on the mountain is also God of the valley....

And sometimes I just wanna dance...I just wanna have fun with the Vengaboys...dance my blues away.

Friendsmaynot be forever

This post may contradict an earlier post, 'Friends are forever.' I am 53 and have I lost any friends along the way? I read this rather interesting article about 'losing friends along the way' The writer received a forward that said, 'if you are not losing friends then you are not growing up.'
No man is an island and friends are an elixir to life. Life happens, you make friends and somewhere along the way you begin to lose touch with some of them, you find that you have very little or nothing in common, your goals and dreams differ, you walk different paths in pursuit of your goals and dreams and you make new friends along those paths.  Hence in order to achieve your dreams and goals and to grow says the writer losing friends is inevitable. "In order to move on, you need to outgrow people and situations.'You don't need to break friendships, you stay in touch but just about.
My significant other swears by the fact that your only friends are the friends that you made in childhood and the college gang that you hung out with.By and large that belief contains many grains of truth.  There are however exceptions to the rule as chaddi-buddies are also known to have drifted apart.
Social media has helped us find long lost friends, made reunions happen but many on our friend list remain faces and names on the list with no action or interaction. Some virtual 'friendships' are most disconnected.
Count your friends when your life has been engulfed by storm clouds and you are sinking into the depths of despair. How many will help you weather the storm? Of those that hung out with you how many will hang in with you helping you weather the storm? I am thankful to those who have hung out with me in good times and bad.
"A friend in need is a pest indeed'

Another good read - How can you learn to love your own fate? believe in AmorFAti and embrace life as a warrior.

Amor Fati, says Nona Walia is a latin term which means that you don't just accept your fate but you learn to love it.
Life is no bed of roses, The roses come with thorns. impossible as it may seem you would do well to embrace and accept the thorns, find the silver lining and take the bull by the horns. .Experience has taught me that complaining and brooding change nothing except for making matters worse.Complaining breeds bitterness and resentment which is not good for health.  Bad things are bound to happen - just let go and the bad things will be gone. Am I right or wrong?

Proud to be Left -handed

On the 13 th of August this year, a friend texted me early in the morning, wishing me a “Happy Left-Hander’s Day.” “So you’re lef...
